Amazing Fantasy Fest is Gregory Lamberson's multi-genre film festival in Buffalo, New York. AFF screens horror, fantasy, science fiction, action, animation and experimental films and typically runs for seven days in mid-September at Dipson's Amherst Theatre in Buffalo. AFF screens films of all types if produced in Western New York. Under its different names, AFF has screened more locally produced films than any festival in Western New York, and Lamberson is Buffalo's longest serving festival director.
AFF began as Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival in 2010, founded by Lamberson and Emil Novak. Chris Scioli was part of the original team and became a full partner in 2011. In 2013, Lamberson and Scioli revamped the fest as Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival, which ran for 10 years and was sconitntently ranked one of FilmFreeway's "100 Top Rated Film Festivals." In 2023, Lamberson launched AFF, the final evolution of Buffalo's horror film festival.
In 2022, the mother-daughter duo of Tamar Lamberson and Kaelin Lamberson launched Valkyrie International Film Festival, showcasing films directed by women from all walks of life. VIFF was an immediate success because it is a warm, inviting, and intimate festival that provides women with a space to speak about their films and experiences in a safe environment and to support each other. The goal of the festival is to uplft women, and auience members have been inspired to create their own films and collaborate each with each other. Uniquely, Tamar and Kaelin watch every film together and discuss them as part of their selection process. The festival runs at a ifferent time each year depening on Kaelin's college/internship needs. VIFF calls The Screening Room home.
Gregory Lamberson has lived in New York State his entire life: he grew up in Fredonia, studied filmmaking and became a filmmaker in New York City, and moved to Buffalo in 2003. He was never tempted to move out west.
With the success of Amazing Fantasy Fest and Valkyrie International Film Festival, Gregory decided to create a festival exclusively for films prouced in New York State. When he and Tamar visited Kaelin in Ithaca, they fell in love with the Cinemapolis theater, and Empire State Film Festival was born.
ESFF screens films of all types over three days and brings together filmmakers from across the state.
Since the very first edition o Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival through Amazing Fantasy Fest, Gregory has programmed animated films, and Tamar and Kaelin have done the same with Valkyrie International Film Festival.
Even at seven days, Gregory has had trouble showing as many animated films as he would like to at Amazing Fantasy Fest. After a particularly exciting lineup of animated films in 2026. he decided to launch a festival exclusively focused on animation. Amazing Animation Festival debuts at The Screeming Room April 30th - May 2nd.
